Critical substances of human origin (SoHO)
Critical substance of human origin (critical SoHO) means a SoHO for which an insufficient supply will result in serious harm or risk of serious harm to recipients’ health.
The SoHO Coordination Board (SCB) has approved EU-level criteria for critical SoHO preparations (Criteria for Critical SoHO and Critical SoHO Entities (circabc.europa.eu)).
The evaluation of critical SoHO is meant to be carried out by the Member States, taking into account the criteria established by the SCB. This assessment should consider factors such as the interest of the SoHO in specific indication(s) and the ability to access therapeutic alternatives (including availability and affordability) in these indications, the organization of SoHO donation systems at the national level, and the specific needs of the population.
The SCB will create and update a list of the substances the Member State consider to be critical SoHOs. The information will be published on the EU SoHO Platform.
