Substitution of biological medicines

EN Ajankohtaista / Biologisten lääkevaihto

A biological medicine can be substituted at the pharmacy for a cheaper alternative. During the medicine substitution, the cheapest interchangeable option is offered, which can be the original product or its biosimilar. Biosimilars and original biological medicines are equally effective and safe.

The substitution of biological medicines at pharmacies started in April 2024 when enoxaparin preparations were included in the medicine substitution. In January 2025, the medicine substitution expanded to all other biological medicines except insulins. Glargine insulins were included in the medicine substitution in April 2025, and other long-acting insulins will be included in January 2026. Short-acting insulins are not subject to pharmacy substitution.
