Marketing authorisation procedures
All veterinary medicines used in Finland must be granted marketing authorisation by the Finnish Medicines Agency Fimea to ensure their efficacy, safety and quality.
Marketing authorisation can be granted to registered pharmaceutical manufacturers and distributors.
A medicinal product can be granted marketing authorisation in Finland through a mutual recognition, centralised, decentralised or national procedure.
Not all veterinary medicines have marketing authorisation. Such products include medicines intended for small groups of animals or rare species, and medicines used to treat rare diseases. A veterinarian can apply for a special permit for the compassionate use of such products.
