New regulation on substances of human origin
Regulation (EU) 2024/1938 of the European Parliament and of the Council on standards of quality and safety for substances of human origin intended for human application entered into force on 7 August 2024. The regulation replaces the current blood, tissue and cell directives (2002/98/EC and 2004/23/EC) and is directly applicable throughout the EU. After a transitional period, the regulation will apply starting from 7 August 2027.
The regulation has been named the SoHO Regulation, as it applies to all substances of human origin (Substances of Human Origin = SoHO), with the exception of organs. The SoHO Regulation will also apply to all operations that have a direct impact on the quality, safety or effectiveness of SoHO. The key objective of the regulation is to protect human health in the EU. Setting high standards of quality and safety for SoHO is aimed particularly at protecting SoHO donors and recipients and the children born from medically assisted reproduction.
