National biobank register
The task of Fimea is to steer and supervise biobank activities and to maintain the publicly-available national biobank register. This biobank register brings together information on the owner of and person responsible for each biobank, the conditions for obtaining samples and their storage location. The register must also contain information on matters related to the usability of the samples and related data as well as research fields in which the samples and data can be utilised.
Fimea must be notified of the start of biobank activities so that the data can be recorded in the publicly-available national biobank register before operations begin. If changes are made at a later date to the data reported to the national biobank register or to Fimea, the biobank must notify Fimea of the changes. There are eleven nationally registered biobanks in Finland.
