Tissue establishments
A tissue establishment refers to a tissue bank, hospital unit, or other establishment in which human tissues and cells are procured, processed, preserved, stored or distributed. Tissue establishments include fertility treatment clinics, units providing stem cell treatments and stem cell laboratories as well as various tissue banks, such as bone banks.
Fimea steers and supervises the activities of tissue establishments in Finland and participates in international co-operation between authorities. Upon application, Fimea grants a licence to a tissue establishment and maintains a tissue establishment register of authorised tissue establishments. Fimea inspects the licensed tissue establishments regularly, at least every two years. Upon request, Fimea provides guidance and advice on the application of regulations concerning the operation of tissue establishments.
