Farmasto

Farmasto

Finland is currently building a national medicines data repository. This repository brings together medicines related data from national authorities into a single,  shared platform.

The data will be made available through farmasto.fi, which will serve as the central and reliable source of high‑quality medicines information. This information supports rational use of medicines  and facilitates the work of healthcare professionals.

Farmasto in a nutshell

At the core of Farmasto is the data platform of the medicines data repository, which provides the foundation for storing, organising and managing data.

The data collected on the platform will be made publicly available  through the national Farmasto online service, which will be launched during 2026. The service will offer users a wide range of content and features.

In the future, the data compiled for the platform can also be used in different types of information systems and digital solutions.

Farmasto

  • consists of a platform for medicines data and an online service built on the platform
  • compiles comprehensive and reliable data on human and veterinary medicines, reimbursable basic ointments and clinical nutritional products
  • is intended for medicines users, healthcare professionals, pharmacies and other stakeholders in the medicines sector such as pharmaceutical companies, wholesalers and information system providers
  • offers easy access to medicines information and data, independent of your location
  • enhances the safe, effective and affordable use of medicines
  • supports the management of exceptional situations, such as medicines shortages.

How the project progresses in 2026

Farmasto will be developed in phases. The key objectives for 2026 are:

  • development of the infrastructure for the medicines data repository and the Farmasto online services
  • ensuring the quality and interoperability of the data collected in the repository
  • renewal of pharmaceutical database production
  • development of a medicines search that brings together data from multiple authorities.

The first version of the Farmasto website and the medicines search is planned for release at the end of the third quarter of 2026, around late September to early October. The design work involves both the authorities responsible for the source data and different user groups. Development is also supported by feedback and assessments from an expert pool.

Winter 2026

  • Practical development work started at the beginning of the year: Tieto Tech Consulting is implementing the data platform, and Meltlake is building the website and related user services
  • Compilation of data into the medicines data repository was initiated, starting with core data and code sets
  • Design of the website structure and functionalities, including the medicines search, began
  • The project progressed according to schedule.

Spring and Summer 2026

  • Development work during spring and summer aims to ensure readiness to publish the first version of the farmasto.fi website and the medicines search in September–October 2026
  • During the summer, a test version of the website and medicines search will be produced, enabling feedback collection
  • Development of data management and the medicines data repository will focus on improving data quality management and the management of core data, code sets, and generic substitution data
  • An electronic service is being designed to enable the submission of notifications, such as notifications of placing on the market and price notifications.
