New webpage provides information on environmental impact of medicines

A new ‘Pharmaceuticals and the environment’ webpage has been launched on the Fimea website. At the same time, the "How to dispose of medicines" page, which was already available on the website, has been updated. A need for the ‘Pharmaceuticals and the environment’ page was identified as citizens are becoming increasingly interested in the environmental impact of medicines. The webpage is available in Finnish, Swedish and English.

The ‘Pharmaceuticals and the environment’ webpage provides a general description of how pharmaceuticals end up in the environment and their impact on it. It also provides a summary of the environmental criteria for medicines at different stages of their life cycle. Information is also provided on how to reduce and manage pharmaceutical and packaging waste and on concrete ways in which each consumer can make a difference to the environmental impact of medicines.
