Fimea’s updated strategy focuses on promoting sustainable well-being and safety. The strategy focuses on foresight and preparedness, capable work community and effective expertise.

"We are heading into the new year with a new strategy," says Eija Pelkonen, Director General of Fimea. "Our goal is to promote well-being and safety through impactful supervision, to provide reliable and value-added expert information to support decision-making and to pioneer the search for new perspectives and innovative operating methods."

Constantly changing operating environment

Fimea’s strategy identifies several drivers of change, such as legislative changes, technological developments, the impacts of social media and rapid communication, and the increasingly scarce public finance resources.

"The agency must sometimes anticipate and react to changes very quickly," Pelkonen says. "We must prepare for health threats and strengthen our ability to act effectively also during disruptions."

To meet future needs, Fimea aims to diversify its competence, optimise its operating methods and utilise the opportunities offered by technology to streamline its work. "Personnel is our most important resource, and taking care of well-being at work is important, especially in times of change," Pelkonen emphasises.

Fimea also highlights the importance of responding to the changing and increasing information needs of society. The agency intends to strengthen its role as a source of reliable information and to increase the availability and usability of information in its registers.

"We will have succeeded in our work when medicines and medical products are safe, accessible and used sensibly," Pelkonen sums up.
