In 2024, Fimea updated its strategy to be prepared for future challenges and to make use of available opportunities to benefit Finnish patients and health care.

The new strategic priorities are foresight and preparedness, capable work community and effective expertise. The goal is to promote well-being and safety through impactful supervision, to provide reliable and value-added expert information to support decision-making and to pioneer the search for new perspectives and innovative operating methods.

Fimea has succeeded in its work when medicines and medical products are safe, accessible and used sensibly.

Swift responses to changes in the operating environment are needed

Fimea’s strategy identifies several drivers of change affecting operations. These include changes in legislation, the growing role of the European Medicines Agency, international health threats and crisis preparedness, and developments in medical devices and health technology. There is also a need to pay attention to the opportunities and challenges of artificial intelligence, the impacts of disinformation and the decline in respect for experts, the change in social media and the requirements for rapid communication as well as the increasingly scarce resources of general government finances.

To meet future needs, Fimea aims to diversify its competence, optimise its operating methods and utilise the opportunities offered by technology to streamline its work. It is also important to prepare for health threats, strengthen operational capacity during disruptions and support the development of legislation.

Responding to the changing and increasing information needs of society is also an important objective in the strategy. Fimea’s objective is to increase the availability and usability of data in registers and to strengthen its role as a source of reliable data.
